Microsoft bans 'wine' from search engine

In a unprecedented move Microsoft has said this week it will ban wine sales from its French MSN website, citing the current problematic legal situation in France with regard to the internet and alcohol publicity and sales. In an email sent to its clients Microsoft said it was revising its editorial rules with regard to alcohol sales and would deactivate related online sales announcements, and key words used for searches, as of the end of May.

“In effect [French] law underlines that the internet is not one of the approved mediums for alcohol publicity,” the message from Microsoft adCenter reads.

"We think this is a major threat to the industry - to anyone with wine on the internet,” said Julien Pichoff of the French online wine blog and search engine site, Findawine.com.

"Microsoft are selling space that is wine related and they are scared they might be fined,” he said.

Pichoff pointed out there are only three major web gateways – Google, Yahoo and MSN – and that although MSN was the smallest, it was backed by a major company.

“You only have to scare three,” Pichoff said. “If the others follow, Google in particular, it will be the end of wine sales on the web.”
